Lot Essay

This drawing features the motif of the four-columned pillar set upon a pedestal which was a signature element in many of the architectural designs for courtyards produced by draftsmen of the Bibiena family. In a notebook from the Bibiena workshop now in the Kunstbibliothek, Vienna, there is a preparatory sketch depicting the same view as the central portion of the present drawing (F. Hadamowsky, Die Familie Galli-Bibiena in Wien. Leben und Werk für das Theater, Vienna, 1962, pl. 36).
