In the past often mistaken for works by Adam Elsheimer, the drawings by Hendrick Goudt are almost invariably executed in pen and brown ink in a swift manner. The largest group of his works on paper were part of an album acquired in 1868 by the Städel Museum, Frankfurt, where several drawings comparable to the present one can be found (among others, inv. 5943 Z, 5983 Z, 14130 Z).
