Lot Essay

This sheet is very close in technique, as well as in the arrangement of heads, to a drawing sold at Christie's, London, 2 July 2019, lot 24. Both can be compared to a drawing in the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. 80.3.299), which is inscribed 'Dubois' and another at Christ Church, Oxford, inscribed ‘Du Boise’, as well as (on the mount) ‘Edward’ (J. Byam Shaw, Drawings by Old Masters at Christ Church, Oxford, Oxford, 1976, I, no. 1483, II, pl. 885). Whether the drawing should be attributed to Eduard or his elder brother Simon is often unclear, but it appears that this sheet should be given to Eduard.
