Lot Essay

The inscription on the verso states that the picture after which Vinkeles made this copy was in the collection of 'Mr L: De Neufville Jansz' (the picture is still in a private collection). This presumably refers to the illustrious collector Leendert Pieter de Neufville (1729-1811), a banker and merchant by profession whose collection of 17th Century Dutch pictures included Vermeer's Milkmaid, now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
