Lot Essay

This composition is close to that in a drawing in the National Library, Madrid, although that sheet omits the figures of God the Father and Christ at the top (possibly because it has been cut; see D. Angulo Iñiguez and A.E. Pérez-Sánchez, A Corpus of Spanish Drawings, II, Madrid 1600-1650, 1977, no. 130, pl. XXXVII). Furthermore, Carducho used the figures of God the Father and Christ in an oil sketch showing the Virgin with Saints and a Confraternity, from 1626-1632, in the Contini-Bonacossi Collection. While the present drawing does not appear to be directly related to any known painting, Carducho did execute a large number of pictures showing the Pentecost (see D. Angulo Iñiguez and A.E. Pérez-Sánchez, Pintura madrileña del primer tercio del siglo XVII, Madrid, 1969, pp. 160-161).
