The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Both canvases have been relined; they are held under tension and remain stable. Overall the pair presents very well with the wealth of drawing and detail readily appreciable. For both there is a pattern of craquelure to the paint surface and a slightly yellowed varnish. There is a slight loss of definition in some of the more delicate passages (such as the flags and rigging), where the upper paint glazes have thinned slightly.

The examination under UV reveals scattered strengthening, notably to the ground in the lower centre of the composition and in some scattered areas of detailing on the boats.

The examination under UV reveals scattered strengthening to the boats and the water in the lower register, and some minor retouching to the sky. There is more marked retouching around the edges.
