This thick single-piece panel is bevelled along its edges on the reverse and remains stable. In raking light, the artist appears to have painted Christ’s flesh tones in thinner earthy glazes, some of which have abraded over time, particularly in the darker tones of the shadows, for which the artist appears to have used the gesso of the panel. Some overpainting is visible in Christ’s feet as well as in the thinner areas of the background. Ultraviolet examination confirms the above and reveals some scattered restoration to the highlights of the sheet as well as in the highlights of the flesh tones. There is restoration to a small dent in the upper centre of the panel, as well as restoration to an approximately 10 cm horizontal crack along the centre right side of the panel. An uneven varnish is visible in ultraviolet light, particularly around the head of Christ. The artist’s masterful technique remains highly appreciable, particularly in the flesh tones.
