Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and is providing a reasonable support for the picture. There is an aged varnish and surface dirt, with some minor scuffs and abrasions along the edges, consistent with frame wear. There is a pattern of craquelure to the paint surface, which appears more prominent at present because of the dried old varnish. There a a few minor repairs visible in natural light, including a small square shaped patch upper left, and a small irregular patch repair on her dress lower centre, with associated retouching and some lifting paint. The examination under UV reveals further scattered retouching, especially to the darker tones. The picture presents well overall, although cleaning and revarnishing would likely prove rewarding in restoring clarity and depth of colour.
