The canvas appears to have a wax-resin based relining that maintains a rigid tension and remains structurally stable. In a raking light, paint losses around the edges are visible, associated with frame wear, with further small isolated areas of retouching, particularly in the darkest passages. Ultraviolet examination confirms the above and reveals a thick, obscuring varnish, over which can be seen more recent scattered areas of retouching. The 'A' and 'F' of the signature appears to have been strengthened.
