Formerly attributed by Federico Zeri to Maestro di Signa (in a letter dated 27 November 1971), this master was more recently identified as Antonio di Maso, a pupil of the celebrated Florentine painter Bicci di Lorenzo (see C. Frosinini, 'Alcune proposte e riconsiderazioni sul Maestro di Signa', Il Maestro di Signa, Florence, 1995, pp. 18-26).

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is approximately one inch thick and is not reinforced on the reverse. It appears to retain its original thickness. It may have been trimmed slightly along the upper edge of its arched top. There is evidence of woodworm damage on the reverse in places, and two pieces of metal have been screwed onto the reverse to assist with framing.
The paint appears to be stable on the support. Under natural light the varnish is yellowed and cloudy in places. A vertical crack runs from the upper left edge down to the second cherub in the mandorla, with a few associated losses. An additional quarter inch loss is visible at the upper left edge of the panel. Several fine vertical cracks are also visible at upper center. Discolored, scattered retouching is visible throughout the mandorla. The gilding may have been refreshed. Ultraviolet light does not easily penetrate the varnish. However, retouching is visible on the center of the Virgin’s nose, a dot over her right breast, and over some lines over her right thigh, as well as over the left-hand angel’s chest and a few other places. The painting could be displayed as is.
