This devotional panel relates to a c. 1510-15 triptych by the Antwerp painter Adriaen van Overbeke, which is known in two versions: the first is in the Antwerp Museum Maagdenhuis and the second is in private hands (see P. van den Brink et al., ExtravagAnt! A Forgotten Chapter of Antwerp Painting, 1500-1530, Antwerp and Maastricht, 2005, nos. 73 and 74). The composition must have enjoyed some popularity in early 16th-century Antwerp, as several variants were produced by members of Cornelis Engebrechtsz.’s workshop (see J.P. Filedt Kok et al., Cornelis Engebrechtsz: A Sixteenth‑century Leiden Artist and His Workshop, Turnhout, pp. 143-147).
