The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a panel of uniform thickness with a vertical grain. There is evidence of hand beveling on all four edges of the reverse. There is a visible split in the panel at right, which has been delicately retouched. The paint layer is stable, with an extremely fine craquelure. The varnish is clear and has yellowed slightly with age. In natural light, repairs to a small scratch at lower left are visible. Two vertical areas of retouching are visible over the bird cage in raking light. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed additional restorations in the background, and to the figures' clothing. Further inspection is hindered by an opaque varnish. The painting presents well and is offered in a painted wood frame.
