ATTRIBUTED TO ANDREA MELDOLLA, CALLED LO SCHIAVONE (?ZADAR C.1510-1563 VENICE)
One of the key exponents of Mannerism in the Veneto, Schiavone here employs the repeated figura serpentinata - figures depicted in serpentine twists. These, combined with the liquid texture of the paint and rapidity of execution of the shadowy architecture, gives the present work its unothodox dynamism. A similar sense can be found in other of Schiavone's works on a large scale, such as the Adoration of the Magi in the Ambrosiana, Milan (see F.L. Richardson, Andrea Schiavone, Oxford, 1980, cat. 236, fig. 86).

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined in the recent past and maintains a good degree of tension. The range of colouring and integrity of the rapid brushwork are quite well preserved overall, with areas of impasto still intact. There are areas of thinness and abrasion, as can be seen in those parts where the ground shows through (in the lower right for example). There is a prominent pattern of craquelure in some parts. The examination under UV shows scattered inpainting and strengthening, with a more concentrated area in the centre, probably to restore an historic damage/loss. Overall the picture presents well.
