The attribution of the figure to Elisabetta Sirani was proposed at the time of the 2007 sale by Adelina Modesti. We are grateful to Daniele Benati for proposing an alternative attribution of the figure to Giovanni Primo, called Gentile.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and is providing stable support for the picture. There is a fine pattern of craquelure to the surface and there is an aged varnish. There is some thinness to the flesh tones and draperies, notably the darker pigments, resulting in a slight loss of definition. The examination under UV light shows scattered retouching to some of the flesh tones, to the darker tones of the drapery and the background and to some flowers. There may be some older retouching beneath the varnish. The flowers appear quite well preserved in general, with the drawing and pigments reasonably well preserved. Overall the picture presents well.
