The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on canvas that has been supported on the reverse by a glue lining. The paint layer is stable, with an uneven craquelure across the surface. There are two horizontal bands of cracking running along the upper and lower length of the canvas. Frame abrasion is visible at the lower edge of the canvas, although this is hidden by the rabbet of the frame. Under ultraviolet light, the varnish fluoresces green. Retouching is visible under ultraviolet light, in the darkest tones of the background, shadows, and the figures' hair. This painting is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
