The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a panel comprised of two horizontally oriented boards. Th upper board measures 8 inches tall and the lower measures 4/12 inches tall. The paint layer is stable under a clear varnish. Impastos in the the sitter's white garment have been nicely maintained. In natural light thin feathered strokes of inpainting are visible in the sky and in the shadows, addressed loss in the upper glazes of the painting. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed further repairs to the sky at the extreme edges, repairs and strengthening to the sitter's hat and along the gold trim of his garment. There were a few additional scattered repairs throughout. The painting presents well and is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
