THIS REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR, HAMISH DEWAR LTD
Structural Condition The canvas has been lined onto a keyed wooden stretcher and this is ensuring a sound structural support and has secured the overall pattern of drying craquelure.
Paint Surface The paint surface has a discoloured and opaque varnish layer and should respond well to cleaning. There is an overall pattern of craquelure which is most obvious in the sitter's face and white collar. The craquelure is entirely stable.
Inspection under ultra-violet light shows scattered retouchings, including a T - shaped repair in the upper right of the background, the lines of which are approximately 5 and 4 cm in length. There would also appear to be some lines of retouching in the contours of the sitter's hair. These retouchings do not fluoresce very clearly and there may be other retouchings beneath the old varnish layers which are not easily identifiable under ultra-violet light.
Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in very good and stable condition and should respond well to cleaning, restoration and revarnishing.
