ATTRIBUTED TO PIETRO FABRIS (NAPLES ACTIVE 1756–1804)
We are grateful to Ermanno Bellucci for proposing the attribution on the basis of a photograph. This view almost certainly shows Vesuvius, and may show King Ferdinand of Naples in the foreground watching the spectacle as the volcano erupts.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This canvas has been relined and retains a strong tension on its stretcher with some stretcher marks evident. There is a small scratch to the upper centre of the painting and a few minor restored damages, primarily to the mount on the centre-right. There is a fine pattern of craquelure overall and examination under a raking light suggests an area of the paint surface at the front may have been stabilised. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination is impaired by a thick varnish; it is probable that there is some infill to the craquelure overall. The brushwork remains appreciable, with the broad strokes of the spewing lava well preserved in particular.
