The first:
The panel is comprised of a single board with a horizontal grain. The panel is supported on the reverse by a single vertical baton that has been instered into a channel. Two small cracks corresponding the baton channel are visble at the upper edge and measure 1/2 inch each. The paint layer is stable, although slighlty dirty, under a clear varnish. There is a a very fine craqulure across the surface. Strokes of retouching are visible in the sky addressing the wood grain, mainly in the sky and along the upper edge. Further inspection under ultraviolet light revealed a campaign of strengthening along the contours of the composition throughout. The painting presents well and can be hung in its current state. The work is offered in a simple black frame with gold insert.
