The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is supported by a glue lining and is stable on its stretcher. There is some slight tenting at the center. The paint layer is stable, although dirty, under a varnish that has yellowed slightly with age. There is a fine craquelure across the surface. At the extreme edges there is scuffing and scattered losses, which are concealed by the rabbit of the frame. Scattered areas of restoration to the dark background are visible in raking light, especially above the rooster eating. Inspection under ultraviolet light was hindered by an opaque varnish. The painting can be hung in its present state but could be marginally improved by cleaning the surface and revarnishing. The work is offered in a carved and gilt wood frame.
