Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. This naturally dark painting remains in a good state of preservation, with the painterly approach to landscape and lyricism of the brushwork well preserved. In a raking light a fine pattern of craquelure can be seen across the paint surface. The paint remains structurally stable. There is an old varnish that carries some dirt. Examination under UV light reveals some very minor scattered retouching. There is a small repaire diagonal tear to the canvas along the left flank of the volcano of approximately 10 cm.
