Lot Essay

Carlo Francesco Nuvolone was born in Milan to a family of painters, receiving his artistic training from his father Panfilo Nuvolone, and later at the Accademia Ambrosiana under Giovanni Battista Crespi. His work is typical of the Lombard style, with its characteristic play of light and shadow, and a particular sweetness in the facial features of his subjects. The present Charity employs a similar facial type as the Immaculate Conception, now in a private collection in Monte Carlo (see F.M. Ferro, Nuvolone: una famiglia di pittore nella Milano del ‘600, Soncino, 2003, pp.183-184, 392, fig. 11).
