拍品专文

The Blinding of the Inhabitants of Sodom is a recently rediscovered composition from Carle Van Loo’s early career, known previously only from a sketch by Gabriel de St Aubin in the margin of the 1773 sale catalogue, now in the Musée du Petit Palais, Paris. Suggested as either the 1722 or 1724 winning submission to the Prix de Rome by scholars Dandrée Bardon and Pierre Rosenberg, the present work was first purchased by sculptor Philippe Cayeu (1688-1769), whose collection was renowned for its contemporary examples of ‘talented modern artists’ (Cayeu, 1769).
