The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a panel, which appears to be comprised of a single board with a vertical grain. The panel is of a uniform thickness and is supported by a cradle on the reverse. There is a split in the panel, as seen in the catalogue image, which runs through the Christ figure's proper right eye. Retouching and repair along this crack are visible in natural light. The paint layer is stable, although slightly dirty, under a clear varnish. There is a network of craquelure across the surface and additional cracking along the vertical grain. Restorations along the cracking and to areas of thinned paint in the flesh tones is visible in natural light. The background gold appears to have been replenished. Repairs along horizontal cracking in the gold areas are visible in natural light. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals multiple campaigns of restoration to Christs' hair, beard, facial features, and chest. The painting is offered in a simple giltwood frame.
