The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The original poplar panel has a slight convex warp. There is evidence of old inactive woodworm damage to the reverse of the panel, most notably along the lower edge and at the apex. The framing element is unlikely to be original. The goldleaf is abraded in parts with the red bowl showing through. There are also scratches and dents to the surface. The original paint has degraded and discoloured over time, notably the Madonna’s robes, which would originally have been blue. Examination under ultraviolet light is impeded by the presence of a thick varnish layer, however, there would appear to be a number of old retouchings, in keeping with a painting of this age.
