The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The reverse of the panel shows sign of old woodworm damage but it is current stable and structurally sound. The painting appears generally well preserved despite the natural ageing of the paint layer and wear to the gilding, particularly at the upper edges. Close examination confirms a stable horizontal crack that runs through Mary’s neckline with associated retouchings and a damage to Mary’s halo. There are some minor losses to the edges of the panel. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination confirms the presences of some isolated areas of retouching, such as to Christ’s right shoulder and to a section below his feet. Some discoloration is evident to the high points of the craquelure.
