The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The single piece panel has a slight convex warp and remains structurally stable. Close examination of the paint layer reveals the drawing and modelling to be well preserved. There are discoloured flecks and strokes of historic restoration, with the surface of the paint appearing dry and showing evidence of raised craquelure, with minor lifting in Christ’s left shoulder. The flesh tones are painted in thin glazes, with the underdrawing visible in the faces and the Virgin’s hands. A thick layer of over paint is visible in raking light in the Virgin’s robes and sleeves. Ultraviolet examination confirms the above, with some streaky restoration to small historic losses by the Virgin’s hands and at the bottom of Christ’s beard. Proper examination of the panel under ultraviolet light is hindered by a thick layer of varnish.
