CIRCLE OF HIERONIMOS CUSTODIS (?ANTWERP-C. 1593 LONDON)
Portrait of Sir Francis Hynde (c.1532-1596), half-length, in a black jacket and ruff, holding a glove
Sir Francis Hynde of Madingley Hall, Cambridgeshire, who was a page to King Edward VI, first sat as MP for the county in 1559 and was three times elected High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. He married Jane, daughter of Sir Ralph Verney of Pendley Manor, Buckinghamshire. Sir Francis built on to Madingley Hall, adding a first-floor long gallery eighty-seven feet in length, in which a pair of portraits of Sir Francis and his wife hang. These portraits, dated 1591, on which the present portrait is based, are the work of the artist Hieronimo Custodis (d.c.1593), one of many Flemish artists of the Tudor court who had fled to England.

A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.

This three piece panel remains structurally sound and the painting appears generally well preserved despite the natural ageing of the paint layer. The painting retains a good degree of stability, although the panel holds some vertical cracks. There is some evidence of surface scuffing and there are some discoloured retouchings to the background areas. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination confirms this and reveals some retouchings to the face and ruff and strengthening to the darker tones in the drapery.
