The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. Examination in natural light shows scattered retouching across the paint service. There is a fine pattern of craquelure that has been stabilised in places. The paint layer remains stable. Examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouching. There is a repair to the canvas in the upper right-hand corner of approximately 15 cm. in length. There is a circular repair to tear to the right of the sitter's face of approximately 2 cm. diameter. There is a large area of retouching above and below the sitter's outstretched hand. There is evidence of repainting to the whites. There is a further restoration to the lower right-hand corner and the background at the lower left. A clouded varnish precludes further examination. The monumentality of composition and the sculptural quality of execution remain highly appreciable.
