The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This panel compresied of two vertically orieneted boards is supported by a cradle on the reverse. The left board measures 5 3/4 inches in width, the right measures 7 1/2 inches, over all the panel is about 1/8 inch in thickness. There are three cracks in the panel one at upper left measures 4 1/4 inches in the sky, the second measures 2 inches and extends through the hair of Saint John the Baptist, the third measures 2 1/2 inches at lower right through the platter and Salome's sleeve. These cracks have all been repaired and are supported by the cradle
The paint later is stable under a clear high-gloss varnish. There is a fine craquelure over the surface that follows the vertical wood grain. The craquelure has been minimized in some areas with feathered strokes of inpainting. Restorations to the aforementioned panel join and cracks are visible in raking light. Addtional scattered restorations in the sky and in the flesh tones are also visible in natural light. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirmed a campaign of feathered strokes of restoration throughout. The painting presents well and should be hung in its present state. The painting is offered in a simple wooden frame.
