Saint James the Less

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The painting is on a panel made up of a single soft-wood board. It is strengthened to the reverse with two transverse battons. There are small triangular additions to the upper corners. Examination in natural light shows a vertical hairline crack of approximately 60 cm. running down the left-hand edge. There is some minor cracking along the grain of the panel, notably in the face, with associated retouching. There is some retouching in the yellow of the spandrels, the dark of the niche and the green of the saint's costume. Examination under UV light confirms all of the above. The sculptural quality of the composition remains well preserved.
