The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a small panel that appears to be comprised of single board with a vertical grain. The panel is supported on the reverse by a cradle. In raking light, a crack running the vertical length of the panel is visible at center. A second crack runs diagonally from the cross, through the hair of Saint John the Baptist. Both have been delicately repaired. The paint layer is stable, and has a fine craquelure. The varnish has yellowed somewhat with age. A contour underdrawing is visible through the paint layers. There is some overpainting in the sky which fluoresces in ultraviolet light. Further inspection with a uv lamp reveals restorations in the skin tones throughout, and some pooled areas of varnish. The work can be hung in its present state and is offered in a painted wood frame.
