Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is supported on the reverse by a glue lining. The paint layer is stable, with a fine craquelure across the surface. The varnish is clear, although the surface is slightly dirty. In natural light broad areas of restoration are visible in the sitter's coat, hands, and in the background elements. Restorations are also visible in the sitter's face, especially to his forehead, eyes and mustache. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a campaign of restoration that addresses a number of holes in the background and two horizontal tears: one through the sitter's ruff and the second through his mustache. The painting can be displayed as is and is offered in a carved and gilt wood frame.
