CIRCLE OF SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK (ANTWERP 1599-1641 LONDON)
Portrait of a lady, half-length, in a black dress, at a stone parapet
The prime version of this portrait, held in a private collection, has been traditionally identified as Lady Margaret Sackville (1614-1676), however, Margaret was known to have fair hair, and this cannot be her likeness. (See O. Millar in S.J. Barnes et. al., Van Dyck, A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, New Haven and London, 2004, p. 626, no. IV.262).

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and is providing a stable support for the picture. The surface is rather dry and the varnish flat. There are some minor tears and damages in the background upper right and left with associated discoloured retouching. There are also spots of retouching visible to the flesh tones in natural light. The examination under UV confirms these aforementioned retouches and reveals further scattered retouching throughout the flesh tones and the sitter’s hair. Overall the picture presents well.
