The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This canvas is supported on the reverse by a glue lining and is firmly adhered to its stretcher. The paint layer is stable under a clear varnish. Frame abrasions are visible at the extreme edges, but are mostly hidden by the rabbit of the frame. There is a fine network of craquelure across the surface, which has been minimized in some areas with a campaign of careful inpainting. In natural light restorations to the flesh tones, especially on the sitter’s proper right cheek and forehead, have become discolored slightly with age. Further restoration to the sitter’s right hand is visible in natural light. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations, and revealed some additional restorations to the sky in the background and to the sitter’s which ruff. Further inspection under ultraviolet light is hindered by unevenly applied varnish. This painting is offered in an ornately carved and gilded frame.
