This oil painting is executed on a panel about 1/8 inch in thickness with evidence of beveling along the extreme edges. The panel appears to be comprised of a singular board with a horizontal grain. There is a restored crack, visible on the painted surface, running from the upper right corner to the center of the panel on a diagonal measuring twenty-three and a half inches which has been supported on the reverse by a cradle. A second, smaller restored crack is visible along the wood grain at lower right, measuring three inches.
The paint layer is stable, although slightly dirty, under a varnish that has yellowed with age. Restorations to the aforementioned crack and to thinned areas of the sky are visible in raking light. Further restorations are visible to the ground around the fishermen at lower left and to thinned areas of the sea, especially around the boats. All of these restorations fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Further inspection with the UV lamp is hindered by an opaque varnish. There is minor frame abrasion along the left and right edges, which are hidden by the rabbet of the frame. Overall the work presents well and is offered in a painted and gilt wood frame..
