The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is uncradled and in a very good state of preservation. The paint surface retains its fine detailing with only a few very minor losses and wear. Close hand inspection reveals rectangular incised outlines on the outer arch; this suggests the edges of the painting may be an addition, although the consistency of the style would suggest that these additions were done by the artist himself. The alternative explanation is that the outer section of the painting was covered by a frame at some point in the painting’s history. Inspection under ultra violet fluorescence reveals some very minor scattered retouchings and strengthening, for example to part of his bow tie. Not examined out of its frame. Overall, the painting is in excellent condition.
