The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

This large canvas has been fairly recently relined and retains a good tension across its stretcher. The picture remains in good condition with the varied modelling, lighting effects and wealth of narrative detail all highly appreciable. Natural ageing is evident in the increased transparency of some of the thinnest glazes. There are several repairs to the canvas with associated retouchings; most prominently, the canvas join down the centre of the picture has been repaired, although this is almost invisible to the naked eye. Examination under ultra violet light confirms this; otherwise, there are isolated strokes of restoration throughout and some further restoration to right edge which may have been damaged.
