The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a large canvas that has been supported on the reverse by a glue lining. The canvas has separated from the stretcher a bit, along a small tears at the extreme edges. The canvas is very slightly uneven on the support, however, it is still stable. The paint layer is stable, yet dirty, and has a very fine craquelure across the surface. Frame abrasion is visible along the extreme edges, usually hidden by the rabbet of the frame. The varnish has yellowed somewhat with age and has been unevenly applied in the sky. In natural light repairs to a cross-shaped tear at lower left is visible. Further repairs along the craquelure and a few dark blue scuffs in the sky are also visible in natural light. Inspection under ultraviolet light was hindered by an opaque varnish. The painting can be hung in its present state, but could benefit from removing the yellowed varnish. The work is offered in a painted Dutch-style frame.
