The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel would appear to be made of two planks of poplar joined together; there is historic woodworm evident on the reverse. The picture is stable but the surface is uneven and there is a vertical split/crack in the upper left, running down to the Child’s head, with associated retouching; there is retouching, and unevenness, all along the join, which runs through the Madonna’s cheek and to the right of her left hand. Old, discoloured retouching is visible in the Madonna’s face and neck and in the Child’s face, upper body, arms and legs. The examination under UV light confirms this restoration and reveals further retouching to the drapery and background.
