The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported on the reverse with a wax lining and is secure on its support. A canvas seam is visible in the background at far right. The paint layer is stable under a clear varnish. Some of the impastos in the sitter’s clothing have been well maintained. In natural light an area of repair to the folds of the sitter's yellow jacket at center is evident, as seen in the catalogue image. A tiny area of inpainting is visible just below the sitter's proper right eye. Thin parallel vertical strokes address an area of loss in the red coat at lower center. There is some abrasion to the sitter's breastplate at center, as seen in the catalogue image. The aforementioned repairs fluoresce under ultraviolet light, as do areas of restoration to the dark background. The painting presents well and can be hung in its present state. The work is offered in a painted and giltwood frame.
