The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining, it is help under tension and remains stable. Examination in natural light shows some slight blooming in the varnish. The varnish also carries some dirt and would benefit from a light clean. There is a fine pattern of craquelure. The paint layers remain stable. Examination under UV light reveals retouching in the blue of the Virgin’s cloak, especially in the lower left corner. There appears to be further retouching in the browns of the background. There appears to have been an older campaign of restoration in the hands. The face seems to be well preserved. The yellowed varnish precludes a more in depth examination.
