The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The canvas is unlined, and provides a stable support to the picture. There is a fine pattern of craquelure and an even surface varnish. The examination under UV light shows strengthening to the hair and a spot above his right eye, and an area of concentrated restoration around 5cm. in diameter to his chin and the neck, possibly to repair an old damage. There is scattered retouching elsewhere, along the edges and to the drapery and fur.
