The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining, it is held under tension and remains stable. The painting presents well in natural light with the detail of the costume well preserved. In a raking light there are two areas of lifting, in the upper right corner and in the lower left of the sitter's gold jacket. This would benefit from stabilisation; the paint is otherwise stable. There is some slightly discoloured retouching in the sitter's proper right hand, in patches to the costume, in the red of the tale cloth and to his proper left arm. Examination under UV light is partially obscured by a cloudy varnish. The retouching to the proper left arm and the background between it and the sitter's body is clear.
