Two further versions of this composition exist, presumably late seventeenth-century copies by Rembrandt followers: one preserved in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp (inv. no. 615) and another in the Louvre Museum, Paris (inv. no. INV 1748).

This relined canvas is held under tension and remains stable. There is abrasion across the surface of the painting, particularly in the darker passages, with greater clarity in areas of the face with greater impasto. The artist’s expressive brushwork remains appreciable. Ultraviolet examination reveals a thick obscuring layer of varnish, with more recent restoration along the edges associated with frame wear.
