The canvas has been subject to relining, it is held under tension and remains stable. The painting presents well in natural light. The fluidity of the artist’s technique remains appreciable though the texture of the brushwork has been altered, to a degree, by the lining treatment. The modeling of the composition is well preserved. There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the surface of the paint. In a raking light a few very minor scattered retouchings to the background can be seen. Examination in UV light reveals some further minor retouchings, notably to the sitter's costume. a thick, cloudy varnish prohibits further examination. The paint is stable.
