The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This unlined canvas hangs loosely on its stretcher and remains stable. It would benefit from being fitted onto a new stretcher. The paint layer is covered in an old layer of dirty varnish, beneath which the artist’s painterly technique and impasto remains highly appreciable. Paint losses can be seen in the centre left, with surface abrasion throughout and marks in the paint layer from where it has been resting on its stretcher. Ultraviolet examination reveals the old obscuring layer of varnish.
