The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The canvas has been recently relined and provides sound support for the picture. The picture surface has a pattern of craquelure, and an even low gloss varnish. The colours and detail of the drawing are well preserved. The examination under UV light reveals restoration to an irregular tear that goes from the centre left background through his (proper) right shoulder and down into the costume, across his waist. There is scattered retouching elsewhere. The picture presents well overall.
