This relined canvas has a good level of stability with no apparent loss of impasto. The wealth of detail and texture of the painterly brushwork appear to remain in excellent condition. There is an even pattern of stable, aged craquelure, which does not detract from the modelling of the landscape. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination reveals some very minor, sensitively applied flecks of restoration to a few areas of the landscape including to a section of the bank next to the traveller on horseback and to a section to the right of the travellers heading down a snowy path on the far right of the scene.
