The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is executed on a panel, comprised of two horizontally oriented boards with a horizontal grain pattern. A cradle has been adhered to the reverse to support the panel. The panel join, and associated restorations, are visible at the lower 1/3 of the painting. The upper board measures roughly 11 1/2 inches and the lower 8 inches in height. The paint layer is stable under a varnish that has yellowed slightly with age. There is an uneven craquelure across the surface. Frame abrasions and associated repairs are visible at the extreme edges, these are usually hidden by the rabbet of the frame. There is some loss to the delicate upper-most glazes in the sky and landscape, as seen in the catalogue image. In natural light repairs along the wood grain in the sky and to a scratch in the tree branches at upper center are visible. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed strengthening in the darkest areas of shadow throughout. Additional investigation with a UV lamp was hindered by an opaque varnish. The painting presents well and is offered in a Dutch style frame.
